I can declare my assets, says Dr Mahathir
However, PH chairman says he does not know if he will be a candidate in the coming general election.
KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he is willing to declare his assets.
However, the former prime minister said this is subject to whether he runs in the upcoming general election.
âYes, I can declare my assets but I donât know whether I am going to be a candidate or not,â he told a press conference after the PH presidential council meeting here today.
Mahathir was asked to comment on whether he would declare his assets, following a statement by PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli today that some 30 prospective PH election candidates, including some incumbents, were expected to declare their a ssets this Sunday.
Malaysiakini reported that they were among individuals assisted by Invoke Malaysia, a voter mobilisation and research group founded by Rafizi.
Rafizi said the prospective candidates would also sign a pledge to work for the people, including paying for a RM20 million public trust fund in case they defected after being elected.
Mahathir however said the matter concerning asset declaration, like Invoke intended, was not taken up by the PH presidential council.
On whether PH would follow Invokeâs example, Mahathir said, âWe have our own strategies and will follow that.
âIn PH, the final decision-making is by the presidential council. So, until this thing is taken up, I am not at liberty to make any statements.â
On the attacks against his granddaughterâs purported lavish lifestyle, Mahathir said in politics, the demonising of people would always be the governmentâs strategy.
âThe whole idea is how to divert attention away from the 1MDB (controversy) and RM2.6 billion.
âI can find a lot of dirt and dig it out, too.â
Utusan Malaysiaâs Sunday edition, Mingguan Malaysia, under the headline âMeera Alyana Mukhrizâs celebrity lifestyleâ, claimed Mahathirâs granddaughter lived a celebrityâs lifestyle by wearing designer clothes, and spent time travelling around the world on a luxury yacht.
The article was said to be based on a Facebook posting by one âSudahlah Mahathirâ.
